3. Suzuki Group Violin Program

Monocacy Valley Montessori School has a Suzuki Group Violin Program taught by Phyllis Freeman of the Peabody Conservatory. Ms. Freeman is a gifted teacher and First Viola with the Maryland Symphony. While other FCPS schools do not offer string instruction until 4th Grade, MVMS allows students to begin as early as First Grade. Our violin students have two 45-minute group lessons per week, 2 or 3 Suzuki Group Violin Recitals during the year, and the opportunity for solo recital performance. At this time the student is responsible for getting their own instrument and materials.

At MVMS, the Music Teachers work closely with Ms. Freeman so that students have the rhythmic training and music theory concepts tied to their violin repertoire and students are encouraged to use their violins in ensemble work in Music Class. The Music Teachers use an Orff Schulwerk-based curriculum complete with instruments, and including the Musikgarten Curriculum for Kindergarteners. Students interested in music will have the opportunity for superior training in musicianship at MVMS. Kindergarteners have an hour of Musikgarten each week, students in Grades 1-3 have up to 2 & 1/2 hours of music instruction each week (if they study violin) and students in Grades 4 & up have up to 3 & 1/2 hours of music instruction each week (including 1 hour of Kodaly choral training, 1 hour of Orff Schulwerk general music training and two 45 min. violin classes).

MVMS is the place to develop your child's musical talents!

--- ASTA Certificate Program Exams:
On June 9, 2006 all 45 students in the Suzuki Strings Program at MVMPCS passed the American String Teachers’ Association (ASTA) Certificate Program examinations.
The Certificate Program tested students’ technical and musical development in 11 different levels of difficulty including tone, intonation, posture, rhythm, memorization, musicality and stage presence. The students were examined by Rebecca Henry of the Peabody Institute in Baltimore and Hilde Singer from the Suzuki Association of the Greater Washington Area.

Rebecca Henry sent comments stating, "I was especially impressed to see that these students are playing at such a level given that many are not receiving private lessons.  It is truly remarkable that the overall level of posture, intonation, rhythm, and musical confidence was so high.  This easily could have been a class of private students." She also stated, "The overall level is so high, my suggestions for further focus are really only in looking for some details to tweak."

Congratulations to all the sting program students and to Phyllis Freeman and the other string teachers on such a wonderful job!
